The images that follow come from both sides of the Atlantic. The selection of maps provides an illustration of the world as cartographers’ knowledge of geography expanded in the decades of exploration that followed 1492. Maps were more than just teaching tools; they contained strategic and valuable information, and their authors were both artists and scientists. The other images are depictions of the conquest done by Amerindians and Europeans—in some cases many years later. These sources show the impact of the conquest on European and Amerindian world views. They help to show how the two groups perceived each other.
